How we use AI at MSU.
Four working principles guide how MSU thinks about AI: human thinking leads, be transparent, protect what's protected, and share what you learn. You may have more principles. Use them, share them.
Human thinking leads.
AI is an amplifier. AI is not a substitute for learning or thinking. We use AI to extend the reach of human judgment and capabilities, never to replace.
Be transparent about how you use AI.
If AI helped you do your work, say so. Disclosure builds trust. Discuss with your instructor, your students, your colleagues, and your boss about when, how, and if to use AI.
Protect what's protected.
Student records, research subjects, unpublished work, sensitive university data do not go into personal AI tools. Use MSU's approved tools, signed in with your NetID.

Three paths to the work.
Whoever you are at Mississippi State, find resources, tools, events, and guidance. As of October 2026, more than 800 people belong to the MSU AI Community of Practice, and 65 AI Ambassadors serve every college and division.

Students
Use AI to learn faster, not think less. Your instructor's syllabus sets the AI rules for each course. When an assignment is silent, ask first, and disclose substantive help such as drafting or brainstorming.
Faculty
Design assignments that work in an AI-saturated world. You decide the role of AI in your courses, from prohibiting it to requiring it. CITE offers consultation on assessment design.
How MSU is actually using AI.
Built to Scale: How MSU Athletics Kept Refining an AI-Powered Stats System Until It Worked for Every Sport
MSU Athletics Communications used AI to help automate a stats system that now turns a full slate of player data around in minutes instead of hours, and the team is expanding it to cover every sport in the department.
Two ITS developers built an AI agent that answers IT service ticket questions in the university’s own tone.
Tyson Mills and Quan Chung spent July at an AWS bootcamp, and they are using what they learned there to improve a Copilot agent that helps ITS staff respond to service tickets.
A tool built in an LLM positioned 50 modules of content across a graduate curriculum.
Dr. Manuel Ruiz-Aravena, an assistant professor of wildlife disease ecology and One Health in the Forest and Wildlife Research Center (FWRC), is building a curriculum analysis tool in Claude to take on the mechanical parts of curriculum design.
